Biography

Claire can usually be found with her nose in a book and a cup of tea or a latte close to hand. Failing that, whatever she is up to will usually involve some form of writing, design or things of a nerdy persuasion. Current obsessions include Darjeeling Earl Grey, well-written YA literature, urban fantasy (preferably involving magic and romance), and turning up her iPod just a little bit louder.

Dr. Elyse Morgan is in trouble. Her whole life has been destroyed around her, and she is now under the custody of the United Nations, who believe that she is close to finding the cure for the HTN4 virus. The virus is a deadly weapon that has been used by terrorists, and was responsible for …

Author Signing: Ben Aaronovitch at Waterstones, 26/06/2012

Having previously reviewed Ben Aaronovitch’s first book, Rivers of London (U.S. title Midnight Riot) here on Chicks with Crossbows, it’s no great secret that I enjoy his work. So I was naturally very pleased to find out that he would be visiting one of the local Waterstones branches here to promote the latest book in the series. …

Review: Soulless by Gail Carriger

I’m going to begin simply by stating that this book has the cure to whatever ails you. Whether it be work-related blues or sheer tiredness, you’ll start feeling better once you’ve cracked the cover and read the first few pages. I wouldn’t quite suggest it as a prescription, but anything with the wicked kind of …

Review: Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare

To follow from Tori’s previous review of Clockwork Angel, I have decided to review Clockwork Prince. I enjoy Cassandra Clare’s books as a whole, but The Infernal Devices have captivated me in a way decidedly different to The Mortal Instruments series. In a lot of ways, I find The Infernal Devices easier to relate to. I’m …

Signing at Theatre Royal Stratford 26/05/2012: Cassandra Clare & Maureen Johnson [#1]

This is my vastly overdue post series concerning the above signing, for which I apologise. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend this at the end of May. The London weather was beautiful and I was very lucky! The signing was organised through Foyles, a bookstore in London which I cannot recommend enough, as …

Review: Hellbent by Cherie Priest.

Hellbent

(If you’re interested, please see Tori’s previous review of the first book in this series, Bloodshot, before reading this review.) Cherie Priest’s urbane, sharp and downright brilliant vampire protagonist Raylene Pendle is back in Hellbent. An accomplished freelance thief sometimes known by the name of Cheshire Red, with a more than slight case of OCD …

Review: Jane Eyre [2011]

Jane Eyre

I am quite picky when it comes to films that I will actually trawl myself to the cinema for. This is due to the fact that I have wasted my money on one rubbish romance-comedy too many for my liking. However, happily, I spotted Jane Eyre looking like a diamond in the rough amongst the cinema …

Review: Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch.

riversoflondon

Despite the fact that I prefer books to digital print and likely always will, I can’t deny the convenience of being able to download a book to my Android phone in the event that I get bored on train journeys. This was exactly what happened when I downloaded Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch, a …
